Fish Friday
Front Street,
the main venue, runs parallel to the beach where fishing boats
are pulled up next to wooden rum shops and bars. Outside these,
local residents set up their barbecue grills to cook and sell
the catch of the day and other specialties such as floats and
accras (fish cakes).
The street
is closed to traffic and chairs and tables are set out. A large
number of families are always present enjoying the delicious food
and drink, and the flavour of a real local get-together. The music,
emanating from large speakers at the end of the street, is not
overwhelming. The atmosphere is rather like a large barbecue party
with very accommodating hosts.
The shops that spill out onto the beach are perfect places to
find a quiet little table, off the street itself—a place
where the sound of the sea mixes with the reggae and calypso from
a small band that sometimes plays in a little gazebo at the top
of Front Street.
